National Citizen Service Graduation Ceremony for Newry Youth
A team of young people from Newry graduated from National Citizen Service (NCS) recently.
The event, held at Titanic Belfast, was an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic journey that the young people have been on and the contribution that they have made to their local community.
At the ceremony the graduates were entertained by local talent Conor Scott, and presented with their certificates by Stephen Green, Chair of NCSTrust and CEO of Rockcorps. The Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland MLA was also in attendance.
National Citizen Service Northern Ireland is a once in a lifetime experience open to all 15-17 year olds from across Northern Ireland. Over a period of three months participants experience new challenges, make new friends and learn new skills.
The programme focuses on personal and social development that promotes leadership, teamwork, communication and community outreach. As part of their social action project the group of young people ran arts and crafts workshops in a local primary school.
The National Citizen Service Programme was delivered by a consortium of youth and community organisations, led by Co-operation Ireland, on behalf of the UK government and endorsed by the Department for Social Development locally in Northern Ireland.
Peter Sheridan, CEO of Co-operation Ireland said, “Providing opportunities for young people from all walks of life to meet and get to know one another is the cornerstone of a shared society. It encourages respect for the individual and an appreciation of the bigger picture.
“This graduation event exemplifies the importance of engaging our young people in positive action-based initiatives. So if we are to deal with the problems recently seen on our streets and prevent future violence, we need to give even more young people the opportunity to take part in projects such as NCS”.
He added, “I congratulate everyone who completed the project and for all their endeavours in helping those less fortunate than yourselves.”
NCS will be running in summer 2014 across Northern Ireland; young people can register their interest at the National Citizen Service website www.ncsyes.co.uk
