Councillor slams South Armagh ‘criminal behaviour’
South Armagh Councillor Roisín Mulgrew has said that people in the Whitecross area should not have to live in fear of break ins.
The recently appointed Sinn Féin representative made her comments following reports of an increase in the numbers of house break ins in the area.
Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor Mulgrew said, “There is a sense of fear within the community and I think people are genuinely worried about the security of their property.
“My Sinn Féin colleague Councillor Barra Ó Muirí has arranged a public meeting on Wednesday 20th January in Newtownhamilton on this issue and I would encourage people from across the area to attend.
“These criminal gangs are actively targeting specific items, in particular farm machinery. I attended a meeting with the PSNI where I was informed that most stolen tractors actually have the keys in them at the time of the theft.
Mulgrew added, “Even this small measure could make the difference between a vehicle being stolen or not and I encourage people to take all possible measures to make their property secure and to report any suspicious activity to the PSNI.”
