Tributes pour in for ‘absolute gentleman’ after Rostrevor crash

Tributes have poured in for the victim of a crash in Rostrevor yesterday evening.

64-year-old Kilkeel man Robert Morris died after being hit by a bus as he walked along the Killowen Road in Rostrevor at around 5:45pm yesterday.

SDLP MLA for South Down, Seán Rogers expressed his sympathy to the wife and family of Robert. Rogers said he was “absolutely devastated” to learn of the death of his long time neighbour, who he described as “an absolute gentleman” who had been a hard worker all his life.

Rogers said, “I know the family very well and my heart goes out to them at this terribly sad time. It is devastating news, a real tragedy, and I want to offer my deepest sympathy to his wife and family. This is a very sad time and my thoughts and prayers are with them.

Roger’s SDLP colleagues also expressed their condolences. MLA for the area, Karen McKevitt said, “I offer my sincere condolences to the man’s family and friends. This must have been a traumatic ordeal for the driver of the vehicle involved, and I will be praying for him and his family also.

She added, “This is the seventh fatal road traffic collision since the beginning of the year, and I would call for everyone to take care and be aware when walking, cycling and driving on roads.”

Councillor Connaire McGreevy also expressed his sympathy. “This is a terrible tragedy that has saddened the local community and, on behalf of the SDLP, I would like to pass on my condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane described it as an ‘awful tragedy’. “My thoughts are with the family of the man who died last night. This man was the seventh person to have died on the roads in the North since the New Year and I would appeal to all road users to be extra careful.

Ruane added, “It is important that we realise the dangers on our road and I would appeal to people to make safety their number one concern when using the roads either driving or walking.”

Police would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who was travelling on the Killowen Road around the time of the incident to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at Steeple or Ardmore Police Station on 0845 600 8000.
