Abbey CBS reach semi finals of High Schools’ Rugby Blitz

On Wednesday 20th November, eight High Schools attended Banbridge RFC to compete in a Year 10 Rugby Blitz.

Banbridge HS, City of Armagh HS, St. Pat’s Armagh and Aughnacloy HS were drawn in Group A, with Tandragee JHS, Abbey CBS, Markethill HS and Ballynahinch HS making up Group B.

Despite the cold and blustery weather conditions, there was some excellent rugby on display and great commitment from the players. At the end of the group games Tandragee JHS, Abbey CBS, Banbridge HS and St. Pat’s Armagh progressed to the semi-finals.

Both games were very competitive with Tandragee edging Banbridge 19-12 and St. Pat’s victorious over Abbey by a 14-0 scoreline. The final was a close affair – Tandragee had good early pressure but St. Pat’s demonstrated excellent defence and then scored two late tries to run out as deserving 10-0 winners.

Ulster Rugby’s Mike McComish paid a visit to the blitz and was encouraged by the good turnout despite the difficult conditions.

Organiser Karl Gale (Tandragee JHS) thanked all the players and teachers, as well as Ulster Rugby Community Coaches Jonny Graham and Mark Riddall for their help on the day. Thanks also went to Banbridge RFC for kind use of their facilities.
