Bradley seeks ministerial meeting on Newry parking problems

SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley has raised concerns over the proposed removal of sixty parking spaces at Merchants Quay, Newry.

Bradley was speaking during a debate on town centre regeneration.

Bradley explained, “Last week during a debate in the Assembly on a single overarching strategy for Town Centre Regeneration, I raised the issue of the public realm scheme in Newry and indeed the impact of the decision to remove sixty parking spaces along Merchants Quay.

“During the debate, the Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland referred to the impact of other Public Realm schemes and in particular concerns raised by Jim Allister in relation to Ballymoney Street in Ballymena.

“The Minister said his officials were actively working on a resolution to the issue. I welcome the Minister’s intervention in that case and that’s why I have asked him to meet with me to discuss the concerns of local traders in relation to Merchant’s Quay in Newry.

“I attended a Public Meeting in Newry last Thursday night which was organised by local traders. They are concerned about the lack of parking around Merchant’s Quay following the Public Realm scheme; they raised their concerns when the scheme was being designed and yet they believe their concerns have not been addressed.

Bradley added, “I have asked Minister McCausland to meet with me and local traders in Newry along with representatives of other government departments and agencies to try and resolve this matter to the satisfaction of all involved before its too late.”
