Mackin’s final lives up to its name

Never has a competition been more appropriately named than this season’s Mackin’s Junior Championship, which was won by a youthful Shane O’Neill’s side in the Athletic Grounds.
It got its moniker from the fact Mackin Animal Feeds are the sponsors but the opening game of Sunday’s triple-header of county finals was the Mackin show in more ways than one.
Armagh Under 16 captain and Northern Ireland Under 19 soccer star Aimee Mackin was named Player of the Match after notching a sensational tally of 2-13 with her younger sister Blaithin adding another 1-6.
Fresh from wrapping up the Division Three title, Dorsey didn’t score a point in the second half but battled on and the impressive Maria Murphy added a goal to the four points she kicked before the break.
However last season’s beaten finalists simply couldn’t contain the magical Mackins, whose pace and finishing helped Shane’s into a 14-point interval lead and they had nearly doubled that margin by the end.
The talented duo produced dazzling displays in rattling up an astonishing tally of 3-19 between them, while Aoibheann Jones scored two of the five goals for a Shane’s side which can go a long way in Orchard club football.
Their ultimate aim may be to challenge neighbours Carrickcruppen but before then Saturday’s league game against Lissummon’s formidable Marley sisters will be an interesting test for the dynamic Mackins.
