Newry Action Cancer shop prepares to be hijacked… but just for a day
Twelve teams from local businesses across Northern Ireland are preparing to hijack their local Action Cancer charity shop on Thursday 19th September.
Preparations are well underway with each team busily gathering new stock for their particular shop as well as fundraising and marketing their activities within their own organisations and to the wider community.
“It will be bargains galore and a few madcap ideas all taking place during the shop take over on the 19 September,” explains organiser Hilary Hanberry, Volunteering Manager, Business in the Community. “Each team has committed to raising as much hard cash as they can – all for a great cause.
“We hope that people will come out in force to the various Action Cancer charity shops located across Northern Ireland to support these local businesses in their efforts to raise the most money. There will be an overall winner chosen from the 12 teams – the one that raises the most as well as a winner for the most innovative ideas. Good luck everyone.”
Peter Lynch, Action Cancer’s Retail Manager added, “Every pound raised makes a real difference to people across Northern Ireland. Since Action Cancer’s BIG BUS went on the road in 2006, it has visited the Newry and Mourne Council area 112 times with 2688 Breast Screenings and 2240 Health Checks taking place on board.”
“The funds raised through our shops go directly to supporting someone’s grandparent through their treatment, someone’s mother, daughter or aunt who is facing breast cancer, a dad who has just learned that he has prostate cancer, to name just a few.”
“The money raised during this challenge could be used to help your family member or friend or the person you walk past in the street. Cancer is everywhere and it’s everyone’s responsibility to help reduce the risk, promote early detection or encourage friends to use our services. A big thank you to everyone involved.”
The ‘boardroom’ showdown will take place at the beautiful setting of Cultra Manor at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum on Thursday 3 October 2012 where the winner will be announced at along with other category winners.
