Narrow Water bridge delegation meeting with Martin McGuinness

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has led a delegation of local business people from South Down including members of the Kilkeel, Warrenpoint and Burren Chambers of Commerce to meet with Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness to discuss the Narrow Water Bridge.

Speaking to Newry Times about the meeting, Ruane stated, “I welcome the constructive meeting we have had with the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness in order to move the Narrow Water Bridge project forward.

“Local businesses have long lobbied for the construction of the new bridge as they see it as a catalyst for economic regeneration in the region and the delegation today reinforced that message with Martin McGuinness.

“These businesses are feeling the effects of the recession and the construction of the bridge would inject millions into the local economy, especially the construction sector which has borne the brunt of the downturn in the economy.

“It is important that we maintain the pressure on having the bridge completed within the time frame set out by the Special European Union Programme Body as they are the major funder.

Ruane added, “The hold up in the construction lies specifically with the Finance and Regional Development Ministers Sammy Wilson and Danny Kennedy and they need to realise that all sections of the community in South Down are in favour of this bridge.

“Today’s meeting was about bringing the strength of feeling in the South Down area over the bridge directly to the Executive so that we can maintain the pressure on have this bridge constructed.”
