Harps for the Hospice

Friday last saw a wonderful evening of harp music by the Newry based “Sonas” harp ensemble at a charity musical evening in aid of Newry Hospice.

The harpists, all students at the Carroll School of Harp, played specially created arrangements as well as individual pieces.

The girls Dervla O’Brien, Emma Fegan, Rachel Fitzpatrick, Catherine Magee, Aisling Treanor, Sarah Byrne played with their tutor, Sharon Carroll, at Lurgan Library.

Organised by head librarian, Deirdre Breen, £540 was raised for Newry Hospice.

The one-hundred strong audience enjoyed the evening of harp music which began with former All-Ireland Harp Champion, Adrian McParland, while Sharon Carroll rounded off the evening with her duo “Searc”.

Students from the Carroll School of Harp also have had a successful time at Newry Musical Feis. Sarah Byrne won the U12 category and the Perpetual Cup, Emma Fegan won the U15 category and Rachel Fitzpatrick won the U18 category.

All the Carroll School of Harp students performed superbly and there were only a few marks difference between first and third in each category. For more information on the Carroll School of Harp or the Sonas Harp Ensemble, you can contact Sharon Carroll via her website, www.sharon-carroll.com
