‘I have called for speed limit change for 18 months’ – Curran after tragic cyclist death

Sinn Féin Councillor Brendan Curran has extended his sympathy to the friends and family of a young Polish man after the news of his tragic death on the Old Warrenpoint road today.

Speaking to Newry Times, Curran said, “This is a terrible tragedy; this young Polish man has travelled to Ireland in search of a better prospect of life and has sadly become another victim on our roads.

“On this particular road I have constantly called for the speed limit to be reduced from 40mph to 30mph. I have been campaigning on this issue for eighteen months now.

“I have held meetings about it and through the council last week I called for another meeting to take place with Roads Service and the PSNI to get the speed limit lowered on this road.

“I have tried to get traffic calming measures implemented, however, this cannot happen until the speed limit is dropped down to 30mph.”
