Newry Council to launch Bliain na Gaeilge 2013 in Crossmaglen

The Mayor, Councillor John McArdle, Seán Ó Murchadha of Conradh na Gaeilge will launch Bliain na Gaeilge 2013 in Crossmaglen Community Centre with children from Scoil Phádraig Naofa, musicians from CCÉ An Bonnán Buí and local Gaeilgeoirí.

Newry and Mourne District Council have said they recognise that the Irish language is an important part of our cultural heritage and an integral part of life in the Council area.

The Council insist they are committed to the promotion of the Irish language through its Bilingualism Policy.

The Irish Language is being celebrated throughout 2013 both nationally and internationally and Newry and Mourne is central to these celebrations when Newry will host Ard-Fheis Chonradh na Gaeilge, the Annual Conference of the Gaelic League, in April.

South Armagh was known as Ceantar na bhFilí (the District of Poets) or Ceantar na nAmhrán(the District of Songs) from the 1700’s. That great literary tradition is celebrated by the diligence of Gaels today in promoting and developing the Irish language community in South Armagh.

The Irish of Oriel lives on in the children, their parents and teachers, and in the many Irish language events, classes, youth activities, drama, music and song that are held throughout the year in South Armagh.

The official launch of Bliain na Gaeilge 2013 takes place in Crossmaglen Community Centre, Wednesday 6th March 2013 at 9.30am.
