Oxfam Ireland in Christmas present appeal
Oxfam Ireland is appealing for people to donate their unwanted Christmas presents. The unwanted presents can help raise funds for overseas projects in places such as East Africa, Kenya, Ethopia and Somalia.
People can take items such as clothes, jewellery, books, DVDs, CDs and records to their nearest Oxfam store for donation. The charity say items such as electrical goods can not be donated.
Speaking about the appeal, Oxfam’s Ronan O’Donnell said, “No matter what you get for Christmas there’s always something you maybe get duplicates of. A lot of people put those things away and forget about them but by bringing them into the shops it actually does a lot of good and we’re able to generate money.”
Head of Retail at Oxfam, Trevor Anderson, says every penny counts, “It’s that whole thing of every penny counts. If people bring one thing to us we’ll make sure we raise as much money as we can for our programme overseas. £25 would provide clean, safe water for 175 people and £50 would support a family of six for 68 weeks with food.”
Local people can take their items to the Oxfam store in Newry. The store is located at 6 Marcus Street in Newry and can be contacted on 028 3026 5256 .
