Curran calls for Newry bypass ‘pedestrian footpaths’

Newry Sinn Féín Councillor Brendan Curran has called for the installation of a new footpath on a main route from the Armagh Road in Newry to the busy Camlough Road junction.

Speaking to Newry Times about the issue Councillor Curran said, “I am calling on Roads Service to carry out a survey of this area as a matter of urgency.

“The construction of this new road a few years ago was a welcome development for the Newry area under the ministry of Conor Murphy and it has no doubt gone some way to alleviate the increasing volume of traffic that comes through Newry on a daily basis.

“It is unfortunate however that Roads Service and the planners didn’t recognise at the time that there would also be a large amount of people travelling on the road by foot.

“The road leads to the local train station and factories as well as the busy Five Ways Shopping complex and anyone who uses this road regularly will see for themselves the amount of people who are out walking and running,” Curran continued.

“This particular road is one of the busiest roads in to and out of Newry. It is unacceptable that walkers and runners have to risk life and limb to go about their daily lives.

“I recently travelled from Armagh City and was amazed to see a stretch of footpath on the main route out and it is a credit to the council in Armagh for the provision of this. It is about time that the main roads into Newry became more welcoming and safer for road users and pedestrians alike.”

The Sinn Fein Councillor added, “I would urge all the people who use this particular road to write to the Minister Danny Kennedy demanding that a network of footpaths is constructed as soon as possible to ensure safe passage for pedestrians who use these roads. Pedestrians too have the right to be safeguarded.”
