Brady slams ‘foul play’ by Newry dog owners
Newry and Armagh MLA Mickey Brady has called for urgent action to tackle the increasing problem of dog fouling on the streets of Newry.
Speaking to Newry Times about the issue Mr Brady stated, “I was dismayed and alarmed to discover the extent of dog fouling in the Newry area. I along with hundreds of others enjoy a walk in the evening time but to see the amount of dog litter on our footpaths is unbelievable.
“The sheer amount of this is staggering and Newry and Mourne council needs to do more to address this issue. I was recently contacted by a constituent to complain about this problem on the footpath leading to Daisy Hill Hospital.
He continued, “In the present times when hospitals are battling to keep infections to a minimum it beggars belief that people could be easily walking this dirt into hospitals without being aware of it. Newry and Mourne council needs to take immediate action to address this increasing problem.
“Dog owners need to be educated into the dangers of dog fouling and also into their responsibilities as dog owners. There is an onus on council to enforce the dog fouling laws and in particular to take into account the cleansing of footpaths in the district but especially outside our healthcare facilities.
“I will be speaking to the Sinn Fein council team to begin to get this issue raised and discussed in the council chamber and dealt with at the earliest opportunity,” Brady promised.
