McCausland seeks views on street trading

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland is seeking the views of the public on proposed changes to the law on street trading.

The changes are needed to bring the law in Northern Ireland into line with a European Services Directive. Similar changes are being proposed for the law in England, Wales and Scotland.

Minister McCausland is keen to hear the views of the public on this issue and commented: “I would ask all of those with an interest in street trading to respond to this consultation and to help us bring forward legislative change which will help to protect legitimate traders, and ensure the public are protected from illegal street trading.”

The European Services Directive is designed to make it easier for traders to do business anywhere within the European Union and came into effect in December 2009.

In Northern Ireland street traders are required to obtain a licence from the local council. The proposed changes aim to bring forward changes to the licence application procedures and eliminate barriers to street traders and pedlars by making it easier to trade.

The online consultation will run for 12 weeks ending on 15th February 2013 and can be accessed through the DSD website (http://www.dsdni.gov.uk). Hard copies of the consultation document will also be available on request.
