Premier Division
Craven goal sinks Windmill
John Craven was the toast of the Cavern Bar after he netted the winner for Finn Harps against neighbours and fierce rivals Windmill Stars in a scrappy affair at Nan Sands park.
Both sides were restricted to a series of half chances in a drab first period but Windmill signaled their intent on capturing all three points when they brought on new signing Mark Hughes and Joe Fegan at half time.
The substitutions failed to make much impact and it was Harps that took the lead just after the hour mark. The Windmill defence was caught napping when a cross from the right flank found the unmarked Craven, who had time to tee up his shot before firing his shot past the Windmill ‘keeper.
Finn Harps had stand-in goalkeeper Marc Greer to thank for a series of inspired saves near the end of the game and Windmill’s Ruari Cunningham will count himself unlucky not to have got his side a point from the game, when in the dying minutes his shot from distance had Greer beaten but could only find the crossbar.
Strollers stun Newry Celtic
Newly promoted North End Strollers produced the shock of the day after they put in a superb performance to sink last season’s Premier Division Champions Newry Celtic at Artie Green park.
The Armagh road side won the game 3-1 thanks to a brace from Charlie Hutchinson and one from Ramey Hughes, but unfortunately the game was overshadowed somewhat as young Celtic player Mark Lowry suffered a suspected broken ankle. Everyone at the Newry Times wishes Mark a speedy recovery.
In the Division’s other fixture, Whitecross recorded their fifth win of the season with a resounding 7-2 victory over Kilkeel Athletic at Willie Davis park.
First Division
Hib-hib hooray!
Congratulations to Newry Hibs who captured their first ever Carnbane league point after they played out a 2-2 draw with Park View at the Barley field!
Midway end Villa Rovers unbeaten record
Midway United inflicted Villa Rover’s first league defeat of the season at Jennings Park. Despite having the majority of the possession, Liam Carville and Richie Troop’s men were on the wrong end of the 3-1 scoreline.
Villa looked on course to continue their unbeaten run when Stephen Kearney opened the scoring before Midway replied with a header ten minutes later to leave it all square at half time.
Both sides created plenty of chances in the second half but it was Midway that proved more clinical in front of goal.
The Meadow side took the lead with ten minutes remaining and then secured all three points when Liam Evans rounded the ‘keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net in injury time.
This result sees Midway leapfrog Villa into second place in the league table.
Mixed bag for local clubs in the Mid Ulster Shield
Eleven Carnbane teams took part in the first round of the Mid Ulster Shield with six teams progressing into the next round and five bowing out.
Milburn ensure swift progress into second round
Millburn United continued their good form of late when they ousted Markethill Swifts Reserves from the competition with a 2-0 win. A first half penalty converted by Ruari Murdock and a long range effort in the second half from Christopher Carroll ensured Millburn would be in the draw for the second round.
Another gr-eight day for Woodside United
Woodside United secured progress into round two with an emphatic 8-0 win over Moneyslane Reserves at Frank Curran park. More impressively, the Bessbrook outfit had six players on the score sheet – Brendan Doran and Barney Preece notched two apiece while Stephen Havern, Conor Giles, Joe McDermott and Tony Marks completed the rout.
Killowen return to form with five star display
Killowen Celtic put their poor league form behind them as they put in a five star showing away to Banbridge Town Reserves.
The Hoop’s captain Aidan Cousins led the way with a brace but Banbridge pulled one back before the interval. Aidan’s brother Ryan netted early in the second half before PJ Parr and Paul Trainor added the fourth and fifth to put the tie beyond all doubt.
On this showing Killowen will surely be confident about taking something from next week’s clash with Newry Celtic and lifting themselves off the foot of the league table.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree
Barney Havern and younger brother Christopher were among the goals as Orchard City breezed into round two with a 6-1 victory away to Sandy Hill of Tandragee. Top scorer Stephen Daly netted a brace while Peter Markey and Phily McCorry also got in on the act.
Shanro Santos left it late away to Gilford Crusaders. The Forkhill natives trailed 2-1 going into the closing stages of the game but netted twice in the last five minutes to seal a place in the second round.
A young Crieve Rovers side put in an encouraging performance to oust Dollingstown Reserves by a single goal but Bessbrook United looked out of sorts when they suffered their heaviest defeat in recent years, going down 6-1 to Coalisland Athletic at Orior park
