First Division
Saturday was a day to forget for local football as it was overshadowed by horrific leg breaks in two separate incidents. Firstly, to Stefan Metcalfe of Bohemians in their encounter with Newry Hibs at Jennings Park and then to Orchard City’s David Henry against Ashgrove Rovers at Frank Curran Park.
Speaking to Newry Times, Orchard City manager Clifford Sterritt explained that there was no malice involved in the injury to David Henry. “It was a total accident. David went up for a header and fell awkwardly on his leg. He’s in the Royal now with his leg in cast awaiting an operation to put a plate and pins in on Tuesday morning.”
The game was abandoned after the incident but as there was only ten minutes remaining the 3-1 score line in Orchard’s favour will still stand.
Gavin Foy had given Orchard an early lead but Pavel Tumkiewicz deservedly drew Ashgrove level shortly before the half time interval.
Ashgrove’s defence stood resolute for the first twenty minutes of the second half but eventually Orchard’s class began to shine through. Stephen Daly was on hand to fire in a quick fire double from close range before the game was called short ten minutes from time.
The injury to Bohemian’s Stefan Metcalfe occurred only minutes into their fixture with Newry Hibs, which resulted in an immediate abandonment of the game.
Newry Times spoke to Stefan’s team mate Paddy Heaney about the incident. “Stefan went in for a 50/50 challenge with a Newry Hibs player and his leg just gave way. A scan has shown that he has broken his tibia and fibula. Thankfully, he doesn’t require surgery but he will be in a cast for ten weeks.”
Elsewhere in the division, Danny McGuigan and Gary McLoughlin were amongst the goal scorers for Midway as they got the better of Parkview in an epic seven goal thriller at Artie Green Park.
Shanro picked up their first points of the season with a 2-1 win away to Rostrevor Rovers while Grasshoppers remain unbeaten as they played out a 2-2 draw with Clanrye Athletic.
Millburn United celebrated their 40th anniversary with a glamour friendly against neighbours and Irish League Championship outfit Warrenpoint Town.
Millburn matched their opponents for much of the first half and only trailed by a goal at the break but the ‘Point’s superior fitness and class were evident in the second half as they ran out comfortable winners.

Damolly United crashed to an 8-2 defeat away to league leaders Killeavy United. Last season’s Golden Boot winner Anthony O’Hare scored four but he will have competition for it this year from close season signing Ciaran Duffy as he was also on target with four goals.
Woodside bounced back in style from Tuesday’s heavy defeat to Ballybot. A hat-trick from Brendan Doran and goals from David McCabe, Conor Giles and Niall Mallon saw Woodside return to form with a 6-1 win over Killowen Celtic in Kilbroney. Raymond McDonald was Killowen’s lone scorer.
Windmill Stars climbed up to fourth in the league table after goals from Josh McKeown, John Joe Maguire and Jimmy Russell saw them pick up three points with a 3-1 win over Whitecross Athletic at Nan Sands Park.
Cleary Celtic dominated their game with a youthful Crieve Rovers side to run out comfortable 4-1 winners at Willie Davis Park.
Armagh GAA star Philip McEvoy opening the scoring for Cleary through a penalty and Paul McElroy doubled their lead when he headed in a corner kick before Crieve pulled one back before the interval.
Shane Lundy turned his marker inside the box to make it three and Steven Quinn secured the points when he finished off a knock down from Philip McEvoy. Karl Shields almost made it five but his long range drive from distance crashed off the post.
Elsewhere, Newry Celtic remain unbeaten in all competitions after a goal from veteran Daniel Forde helped them to a 2-1 win over a plucky Ballybot United side. Kilkeel recorded their first league win with 1 -0 victory over North End Strollers and Bessbrook United went joint second after a 4-2 win over Rockview United.
