Carnbane round up, 25th August 2012
Local football spectators were treated to another goal fest on Saturday. Forget about the water logged pitches, it was raining goals in the Carnbane League – we have 38 goals to report in 8 games!
Premier Division
For the second successive Saturday Finn Harps took a two goal lead but failed to see the game out. Fergal Murphy and Caolan Gray were on target for Harps to give them a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break but Cleary Celtic turned it around in the second half to earn a deserved point. Substitute Mark Cahill pulled one back before Steven Quinn equalised with a 30 yard screamer.
Whitecross are having no problem adapting to life in the Premier division. They picked up their second win in three games with an emphatic 6-1 win over Crieve Rovers at Nan Sands Park. Talisman Ally Bann fired in a hat trick, Darren Shields hit a brace and Eamon Reavey also got his name on the scoresheet for last season’s First Division Champions.
First Division
Orchard City continued in the ascendancy with another good show to brush aside promotion hopefuls Bohemians at Willie Davis Park. Stephen Daly got Orchard off the mark twenty minutes in, capitalising after a Boh’s player was caught in possession. Minutes later, Declan Carville thought he had made it two but his goal was disallowed for a handball incident in the lead up to it. Bohs were fortunate to go in only one goal down at the break as Carville and Hillen were both guilty of spurning good opportunities.
Orchard continued to dominate possession and proved more clinical with their finishing in the second period. Daly added to his earlier effort while there were also strikes from Chris Havern and Thomas McCann to lift Clifford Sterrit’s men into top spot in the First division table while also maintaining their 100% record.
Milburn United had Ruari Murdock to thank as he contributed to all of their three goals as they came from behind to beat Collie Price’s Clanrye Athletic 3-2. The ‘Point men took an early lead – pressure from Murdock led to a Clanrye defender putting the ball past his own ‘keeper. The lead was short lived though as Clanrye took advantage of some poor defending at the other end and Milburn found themselves 2-1 down at the interval.
Gary McMahon was unlucky not to pull the sides level after the break, seeing two efforts cleared off the goal line. Milburn were then awarded two penalties – Ruairi Murdock dispatching both his penalty kicks to the left hand corner of the net to give Milburn a very valuable three points.
Ashgrove Rovers missed the chance to pick up a first league win of the season after a six goal thriller with Carwheel United in Killeavy saw both teams take a share of the spoils. Cricky Smith’s hat trick helped Ashgrove to a 3-2 lead but in the dying minutes player-manager Marty Magee brought down a Cartwheel player inside the box and the referee had no hesitation in point to the penalty spot. The Cartwheel player dispatched the resulting penalty kick to ensure his side weren’t going back to Crossmaglen empty handed.
Elsewhere in the First Division, Grasshoppers picked up three points with a 3-0 win over Sean Harland’s Midway United at Frank Curran Park.
Kehoe Cars Bessbrook Cup
In the quarter finals of the Bessbrook Cup, Paul Quinn struck a stunning second half hat trick as Ballybot hammered Villa Rovers 5-0 at the Barley Field.
Newry Celtic are also through to the last four after knocking out holders Bessbrook United. The sides were locked at 2-2 after extra time but Celtic edged through 5-4 on penalties. Ballybot and Newry Celtic will join Windmill Stars and Orchard City in the draw for the semi finals which will be made by the sponsor Peter Kehoe at the end of August.
