Carnbane round up, 18th August 2012
Many of Saturday’s fixtures fell victim to the bad weather but the five games that survived the inclement conditions certainly didn’t disappoint, producing three hat tricks and no less than 23 goals between them!
Orchard City’s 100% record was in no danger of waning on Saturday as they cruised past Grasshoppers in the quarter final of the Bessbrook Cup, knocking in six goals without reply. We are running out of superlatives for Declan Carville – the ex Bessbrook United and Newry City striker bagged a super hat trick to top the division’s goal scoring chart. Niall Havern, Anthony Fearon and Stephen Daly were the other men on target for Clifford Sterrit’s outfit.
Orchard have put together an exciting side, boasting multiple Carnbane Premier Division league winners in their team. They appear to have strength and depth in every position and last week’s impressive acquisition of former Rangers, Linfield and Newry City midfielder Lee Feeney can only add to this.
The 2011 Bessbrook Cup winners, Windmill Stars also coasted into the Semi Finals with a 5-0 victory over Crieve Rovers at Willie Davis Park. John Joe Maguire struck a treble while there was also goals from John Fegan and Josh McKeown.
In the Premier Division, Damolly picked up a shock win over Finn Harps at Nan Sands Park to restore a little pride after last week’s 10-1 drubbing by Woodside. Harps looked on course for the three points when a double from John Craven gave them a commanding lead but Damolly were in no mood for feeling sorry for themselves and hit back with goals from Cathal O’Hare, Brian Henning and Philip McNally to sink Harps and claim all three points. In the divisions only other fixture, a hat trick from Ciaran Duffy and one from Glen McCoy helped Killeavy United to a resounding 4-0 win over Cleary Celtic to lift them to joint leaders alongside Woodside.
Only one First Division fixture went ahead on Saturday, where Midway United picked up their first points of the season with a 2-1 win away to early pace setters Milburn United. Felim McCoy gave Midway the lead but Ruari Murdock put Milburn back on level terms just before the half time whistle. Kevin Carr then scored what proved to be the winner ten minutes into the second half when he bundled the ball home from a corner kick.
