Irwin ‘concerned’ at University of Ulster debacle
DUP Newry and Armagh Assemblyman Councillor William Irwin MLA has described today’s University of Ulster debacle as a ‘very concerning issue’.
Irwin was speaking to Newry Times after it emerged that some 400 young people in Northern Ireland have had their ‘unconditional offers’ for a place at the University of Ulster withdrawn.
The affected students had applied for the Computing and Engineering course in the University of Ulster and all 400 were told just hours later that their unconditional offers had been withdrawn because of a ‘computer glitch’.
Irwin stated, “This is obviously a very concerning issue and when you consider that some students had turned down other universities as they had been given notice that they had been accepted to the University of Ulster, then there are a lot of questions to answer for the University of Ulster.
“Will these students be able to now take up the other options they turned down?”
He added, “This is being blamed on a computer glitch, however some one is in control of these systems and we need a full response from the University as to how this happened and what action will be taken to address the concerns of those students affected.”
