Hazzard praises Special Olympics Ireland

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has praised the work of Special Olympics Ireland and said that it is important that they are supported.

Speaking to Newry Times, Hazzard said,

“As we move towards the start of the Olympics and Para Olympics it is also important that we don’t forget the work of Special Olympics Ireland and its volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year to provide people with intellectual difficulties an outlet in sport.

“I particularly would like to commend Down Special Olympics, based in Downpatrick and Shimna Stars in Newcastle who have done so much good work encouraging people with intellectual difficulties into active and competitive sport. One of the Down Special Olympics athletes has recently been chosen to represent Ireland in the next tri-nation golf tournament in Dublin in September and I wish them well.”

He added, “Sport is a great leveler and apart from the fun involved and the plethora of health benefits associated, it allows people to mix and become socially mobile. I hope to meet both organisations in the months ahead to give my support to their projects so that they can continue to help people with Intellectual difficulties across South Down.”
