Road safety proposal in Warrenpoint

Warrenpoint councillor Michael Raune has insisted that he has been actively looking at ways to improve road safety for children attending local schools. One particular issue to have taken his attention recently is the junction between Upper Dromore road and the Burren road.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane explained, “This junction is of concern as a result of heavy traffic on the road, particularly at peak times when the children and parents are crossing at school opening and closing times.”

“One potential solution is to install a pedestrian crossing. I met with the Roads Authority on site recently, before the schools closed for the summer. This provided an opportunity to illustrate some of the dangers associated with this crossing and to point out that numbers of children are using the laneway at the junction to get to the Bridal Loanan.”

While he conceded that the narrowness of the junction leaves little scope for road works, the Roads service will be looking at the pedestrian crossing option and he will be liaising with them over the coming weeks to ensure the process is moved forward.
