‘Housing Executive tenants need double glazing’ – McKevitt
SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has said she is concerned about the decision by Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland to suspend the roll-out of double glazing in Housing Executive properties on grounds of cost.
Speaking to Newry Times she said: “Many Housing Executive properties are long overdue this basic improvement. People who need social housing should not be forced to pay over the odds to heat their homes indefinitely. It is right that the Minister wants best value for public money, but it is wrong that he is only finding out about overly expensive working procedures now.”
She added, “That should have been dealt with at the tendering stage. There is concern now that unreasonable delays may mean people of limited means having to pay extra for heating through another winter.”
