Ruane set for European parliament role
Newry Times has learnt that local Sinn Fein MLA Caitriona Ruane is set to take on the MEP role vacated by Bairbre de Brun this week. A Sinn Fein insider spoke to Newry Times and said, “Caitríona Ruane MLA is a firm favourite to take the role due to her past roles with human rights.”
The path for cleared for Ruane to take the European hot-seat after long serving Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brun announced this week that she was stepping down from European Parliament duties for ‘personal reasons’.
Concern was growing in recent weeks after the popular politician – who topped the poll in the 2009 European election – was off on sick leave for several weeks. Despite vacating her seat as MEP, Sinn Fein publicly insisted they she will remain a key senior figure within the party.
In a statement, Gerry Adams paid tribute to de Brun for her work in politics, which spans three decades. “I thank Bairbre for her work over many years and for her friendship and look forward to working with her in the future.”
Sinn Fein has refused to confirm the appointment but it is likely that their decision will be made after a party convention on the issue next month, where nominations can be put forward.
