Murphy v Smith

Newry times caught up with “Irish” Patrick Murphy ahead of his fourth professional fight for the Queensland Welterweight Title.  The fight will take place in Brisbane on the 15th of December and is only Murphy’s fourth professional bout.   The former Ulster Senior Amateur Champion takes on Brett Smith who has won five and drawn one out of his last six contests and is Patrick’s first fight doing eight rounds so it is a step up for the former Sacred Heart man.

“He’s got a bit more experience than me as a pro but I have put the hard work in the gym and feeling fit and ready.  I have been out doing longer road work in the mornings and I’m feeling confident of a winning performance on the night.”

Newry times will catch up with Patrick next week after the fight to hopefully report a great result.

Louth Championships

At the Louth Championships last weekend St. John Bosco picked up four titles with Neil Mathers, Nine Counties Champion Kane Tucker, Ryan Lavery and the All Ireland Cadet Champion Rory Lavery boxing superbly to be declared victorious on points decisions.  Also Shane Mc Clorey, Nicole Mc Cann and Molly-Jane Patterson also became County Louth champions by walkover. However, Brendan Mc Parland, Darren Mc Cabe, Aaron Smith and Dean Mc Cabe lost their finals but boxed extremely well.  It has been a good start to the season of St. John Bosco and with so many entries in this championship it bodes well for the new year that the club will have a good chance of success in the Mid – Ulster and Ulster championships.   Coach Adrian Patterson would like to thank O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club, Dundalk for inviting them to the event getting much needed action before the Christmas break.

Dublin Select vs Down Select

Cuan Mhuire Sacred Heart Boxing Club will be hosting a Christmas extravaganza of boxing to end the 2011 in style.  It has been a great year for local clubs in the Armagh/Down area and this event will have the cream of the crop of the counties on show.

Coach Owen Murphy has identified the need for more inter-county tournaments like this one.  “The show will be a great event and I have chosen two boxers from each club to identify the strength and depth of boxing talent in the area.  We need more events like this to promote the sport and keep promising young talent interested in the sport and as it is the last tournament of the 2011 calendar it would be great to get a good turnout.”

There will be a strong Down title winning team of All Ireland, Cadet, Ulster and Nine County Champions on show.  Some of the boxers featuring on the fight card will be, Conor Wallace and Robert Mc Greevy (Sacred Heart), Conor Martin (Banbridge), Eugene Mc Keever and Stephen Mulholland (St Malachy’s Abc), Allan White and Terry O’Reilly (St Brigids),  Paddy Falloon and David Doran (Camlough) and Robert Preece and Dean Mc Cabe (St. John Bosco)

The show will start at 7.30pm on Friday 16 December at the Newry Foresters Hall, William Street with five pound entry fee.
