‘Bombers are devoid of any political principle’ – McDonald

McDonald said those responsible for the 600lb bomb were 'not forwarding the cause of Irish freedom'

Sinn Féin Councillor Packie McDonald has accused those responsible for abandoning a 600lb-primed bomb on a busy road as being ‘devoid of any political principle’.

Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor McDonald said, “The people who abandoned a primed 600lb bomb need to explain to the people who then drove pass the van as to why their lives were put in danger. The people who abandoned the van never even took the time to switch off the ignition, never mind ensure that the abandoned device was safe. These people who claim to represent the community are devoid of any political principles and are not forwarding the cause of Irish freedom by their senseless acts.”

“The people of Ireland”, he continued, “have continually delivered a message that they do not want these types of acts carried out in their name and these groups need to listen. I would call on them to have a long hard look at themselves and realise that the conflict in Ireland has been over for a long time and the vast majority of people have moved on.”

“I would ask them to attempt to catch up with the rest of the Republican and Nationalist communities by declaring that their campaign is over,” he added.
