Those present were also told by Chairperson of the Association Declan Murphy, that whilst the current uncertainty and impasse in relation to the much-needed Community Centre continues to be a black cloud hanging over the entire community, the Community Association and all involved with it should be proud of their successful endeavours to provide a wide range of community events.

Declan also thanked those who had helped the Camlough Community Association in the many projects and events organised over the past year, with particular praise to the outgoing committee who ‘had stayed the course despite the many ups and downs that they have had to endure’.

Association Secretary Bernie Loughran’s report detailed the many activities and initiatives that Camlough Community Association had been involved with this past year.

Bernie told those present, “The Community Halloween and Christmas Family Fun events continued to be very popular and this coming Friday 6 December Santa and his team of little helpers will be in the village for the Christmas Lights switch on.

“The event will also highlight the sporting achievements of the local sports clubs.

“There will be musical entertainment. The fun starts at 6.15, with Santa hopefully arriving from the North Pole at 7 pm.”

The secretary continued, “The Community Association was also to the fore of supporting families and homes impacted by last year’s flooding which saw homes at Cashel Close in particular being badly flooded.

“In April of this year, the Association along with the Gaels for Palestine Group organised a vigil to highlight the ongoing death and destruction taking place in Palestine.

“A tree planting ceremony in October past to highlight the one-year anniversary of the current onslaught in Gaza also took place. We thank, in particular, our dear friend and lifelong community activist Donna McCoy-Sloan and their family for their support with that poignant event.”

Many of those present at the AGM praised the pre-All-Ireland Football Final Armagh fans warm-up Party hosted by the Camlough Community Association in the village on 16 July.

The evening of music, song, dance and craic received airtime on RTE.

Those at the AGM were told people came from Camlough and Bessbrook and throughout south Armagh and further afield to what was an evening of music, craic and family fun that will never be forgotten.

Commenting on Armaghs historic all-Ireland win, Declan Murphy said, “The fact that we have had four marvellous ambassadors for this area, Blaine Hughes, Conor Mackin, Greg McCabe and Ciaran Mackin on the Armagh all-Ireland winning team is one that we are all so proud of and we congratulate them.”

Community Association Treasurer Leon O Hagan expressed his sincerest thanks to the local businesses and individuals who had supported the many community events the association had organised.

He also paid tribute to all those members and supporters who had helped out the community association with their various fundraising efforts.

Leon also outlined other work that the busy Community Association had been involved with. “We have been involved in spinathons, white collar boxing and as always we provided logistical backup for the Crooked Lake Triathlon in 2024.

“Importantly our  Community Association is part of the group that is intent on developing the sporting and tourist potential of Camlough Lake.

“Newry, Mourne & Down Council as lead partner, has been successful in securing almost £3 million to fund a recreational hub at the lake which will provide storage for our canoes, changing rooms, shower and toilet facilities and a meeting room to organise and run events.”

The meeting concluded with the Chairperson thanking all for their attendance and their efforts.

“We are fortunate through our wide network of sporting, arts, cultural, voluntary and community groups that we have maintained a caring and healthy community spirit.

“Our Community Association is proud to work in partnership with all to ensure we have a thriving, healthy and diverse community.

“Hopefully those essential resources that we require, in particular a modern fit for purpose Community Centre, will become a reality in the not too distant future.”
