Man, 26, arrested after Newry shopping centre theft incident | Newry News

Police in Newry have made an arrest after a report of theft at a local shopping centre.

Local policing Sergeant Willis explains, “Security staff at the centre contacted police to report that they had detained a man they believed had been involved in the theft of multiple items and the assault of a staff member.

“The man, aged 26, was arrested on suspicion of theft, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and going equipped for theft.

“He remains in custody at this time.”

Sergeant Willis continues, “Thanks to quick-thinking and observant store staff, we were able to ensure that this individual was held accountable.

“For the month of December, ensuring public safety is a priority for the Police Service, as part of our annual Season’s Greetings operation – and that includes those who work in our retail sector.

“We know that the impact of this type of crime is significant for owners, their staff and the wider community so it’s important we all work together to reduce this.

“We continue to urge all business owners, employees and members of the public, to report retail crime to police as soon as possible.

“The sooner reports are made to us, the sooner we can investigate and build a picture or pattern of any offending, and coordinate our resources to tackle the issue.
