The visit offered MLAs and Councillors the opportunity to hear directly from the dedicated volunteers who make Samaritans’ work possible.

The team shared their experiences, challenges, and the profound impact their support has on individuals facing difficult times.

This engagement is part of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s aim to support mental health initiatives within the community ensuring that local services receive the recognition and support they need.

Dundalk resident and volunteer at the Samaritans of Newry and Dundalk branch, Nuala Rafferty, says, “Being a Samaritans volunteer with the Newry and Dundalk branch is truly a privilege.

“Every day, I have the opportunity to lend a listening ear to people who need someone to talk to, without judgement.

“It’s humbling to know that a simple conversation can offer comfort and hope to someone who is struggling.

“Our community is strong, and through the power of listening, we’re helping people find a way forward. I’m proud to be part of such a compassionate and dedicated team.”

The Newry and Dundalk branch plays a crucial role in providing emotional support to anyone in distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide.

Volunteers are available 24/7 to listen without judgment, offering a safe space for individuals to share their feelings in confidence.

Daire Hughes, MP for Newry and Armagh says, “Samaritans are a lifeline for so many in our community.

“I commend them on the incredible service they provide and am eager to learn more about their plans for the future.

“The breadth of their services and the experiences of those who volunteer their time and energy to support others reflects the very best of our community.

“Mental health is a priority and I will continue to work hard with others to develop and bolster the incredible work being done here.”

Samaritans are keen to engage with local councils and policymakers to ensure that mental health support remains a top priority within the community.

By working together, we can address the growing need for accessible services and create policies that foster emotional well-being. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on mental health in our local area.

Samaritans branch Director Martin Darling says, “We are always keen for local politicians to visit the branch, meet with volunteers, and discuss the ways in which local government can further support our mission.

“We appreciate any opportunity to raise awareness of our services, encouraging those in need to reach out and highlighting the importance of community support in tackling mental health issues.”
