Newry MLA Justin McNulty calls for action to ease crippling insurance costs | Newry City News
SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty is calling for decisive action to ease crippling insurance costs for people across the North.
McNulty was speaking after home insurance premiums in the North more than doubled in the last 12 months, with Newry Mourne and Down District standing as the most expensive area of the North to insure a home.
Car insurance costs are following a similarly rapid rise, with drivers in the North forking out an average of £1,051 per year, a rise of more than £400 from 2023.
Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty says, “People are buckling under the explosion in insurance costs, which is pushing pressurised households to breaking point.
“As a member of Stormont’s Justice Committee, I have been fighting hard for reform around insurance and the costs associated with it.
“It is my very firm view that highly profitable large insurance companies are being given far too much space to charge hard-working and hard-pressed people staggering amounts of money in insurance premiums.
“Ahead of the last Assembly Election, every party asked voters to trust them to address the cost of living crisis.
“I am determined to keep that promise.
“But I have been deeply disappointed by the disinterested attitude of the Executive parties.
“Hardworking people are at breaking point and deserve more than lip service from Ministers.
“This is an issue that I will be raising in the Assembly Chamber next week, and I will be challenging our leaders to take decisive action to ease the burden of crippling insurance costs.”
