The Newry representative explains, “These are exciting times for Newry.

“We have a number of fantastic projects being progressed locally that have the potential to transform our city centre.

“These projects include our City Centre Park, new Theatre and Arts Complex and our new Civic Centre.”

Cllr. Mathers continues, “We are aware of some concerns and speculation in relation to local car parking.

“As it stands, no decision has been made in relation to the key sites being discussed.”

The elected representative said that there was a need to develop a robust car parking strategy for the City.

“Sinn Féin acknowledges the need for a good quantity of car parking spaces in our city centre, especially for workers, shoppers and worshippers at our various places of worship.

“It is with that in mind that we are calling on the Council to develop a robust car parking strategy for our city centre.

“This needs to identify new sites, explore all options and provide adequate parking for workers, shoppers and worshippers.”

The Councillor adds, “We will be tabling a motion to that effect and hope to secure the support of the full council.

“We will also keep pushing the Council to work with government departments, businesses and others to develop this strategy, which is key to Newry’s economic development.”

Council Motion

This Council acknowledges the transformative impact that key projects will have locally.

Council further recognises that our new City Centre Park, Theatre and Arts Complex and Civic Centre have the potential to enhance Newry city centre and breathe new life into the high street.

This Council recognises concerns and speculation in relation to car parking, especially in Newry city centre.

We call, therefore, for a robust city centre parking strategy to be developed by Council.

This strategy should consider and prioritise;

  • The provision of adequate levels of car parking in Newry for workers, shoppers and worshippers
  • The identification and evaluation of waste ground and sites currently owned by Council that could be made available for car parking
  • Partnership working with government departments to explore the potential for development of bespoke car parking sites, including, if viable, multi-storey facilities
  • The provision of parking passes for workers in the district in areas of high pressure on car parking
  • A robust communication plan and engagement process with the public, including workers, businesses and worshippers
