Local Southern Trust Nurses Recognised at BNJ Awards | News in Newry

Three nurses from the Southern Health and Social Care Trust have been shortlisted for national awards, which highlight how nursing is at the centre of all patient care.

Hilary McCamley, a Bespoke/Specialist Placement Practitioner with the Community Learning Disability team and Head and Neck Cancer Specialist Nurses Kate McGinn and Catherine English have been shortlisted in The British Journal of Nursing Awards 2023 for Mental Health Nurse of the Year and Oncology Nurse of the Year respectively.

Hilary has been recognised for her role in supporting the discharge of individuals with a learning disability from inpatient care to their new homes and with young people transitioning from children to adult services.

Kate and Catherine have been recognised for their work in developing training sessions for hospital and community teams on how to care for their complex patients.

They have also provided education to patients and families on looking after airways, as well as running a nurse-led tube change clinic.

On top of this, they have created a steering group with community health professionals to provide a seamless transition of care between hospital and home.

Jan McGall, Director of Mental Health and Learning Disability, says, “Hilary has been part of the team behind this redesign of our services which will support individuals most in need.”

Cathrine Reid, Director of Surgery and Clinical Services, says, “Kate and Catherine are passionate about offering their patients the best possible care and access to services.

“They pride themselves on giving a personalised patient-centred service and ensure that patients are offered the utmost support throughout the cancer journey.”
