Men’s Over 40 Programme Raises £8,000 for PIPS Newry
Local men Martin Connell and Tommy O’Hanlon of the Respect Project recently presented PIPS Hope and Support’s fundraising coordinator Padraig Harte with a cheque for an outstanding £8,000.
The money was raised through the Respect Project’s ‘Kick Start Your Health’ programme made up of over 25 men over the age of 40.
The men took part in a sponsored mountain climb of the Mournes on Sunday 11 October.
Speaking at the cheque presentation, Martin said when the programme developed, the group wanted to undertake a fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for PIPS Hope and Support.
“When the Kick Start Your Health programme began, we asked the group to undertake a fundraising event and with the programme having a heavy emphasis on mental health, we selected PIPS Hope and Support because they have been providing invaluable support to our community from 2003, helping so many with issues affecting their quality of life and we knew this money would do just that.
“Never did we believe that we would have raised a total of £8,000 and it was amazing to witness the flood of support we all had from family, friends, the community and business community prior to the event and on completion.”
Martin continued, “Personally, I would like to thank all the lads who have been undertaking this programme for their efforts and I want to congratulate them all for their achievements.
“As a group, we would like to thank our families, friends, local and business community who supported this initiative.
“There are too many individuals and businesses that have to be thanked and we don’t want to leave anyone out, so I hope this serves that,” he adds.
Padraig Harte, PIPS Hope and Support’s fundraising coordinator thanked Martin, everyone involved with the Kick Start Your Health Programme, and all who supported the recent fundraiser.
“PIPS Hope and Support wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Martin, the team of men, the local community and all those local businesses and individuals for raising this fantastic amount for our charity.
“PIPS Hope and Support couldn’t deliver the much-needed help and support services we offer to our community without the astonishing efforts of supporters like Martin & Co.”
Padraig added, “The Respect Project have been real ambassadors for mental health and we are forever grateful to them for that and for their partnership with PIPS Hope and Support.
“The significant funds raised will assist us in delivering immediate therapy to anyone with suicidal thoughts, high levels of anxiety, poor mental health or bereaved through suicide.
“Our best wishes and appreciation to everyone involved.”
