FREE six-week Stress Control class in Newry

The Southern Trust is running a number of free Stress Control classes over the course of the next four months.

If you are currently suffering from stress, know someone who is or just want to be better equipped, then this is the course for you.

The six-week evening sessions start in SRC Newry Campus (Lecture Theatre), East Building, Patrick Street, Newry, BT35 8DN, on Tuesday evenings from 21 April 2020 for six weeks until 26 May 2020 and run from 6:30pm – 8:00pm.

The free six-week programme is held once a week and teaches skills and techniques for managing stress.

It is funded by the Public Health Agency and organised in conjunction with the Southern Regional College and Libraries NI.

The course is designed to help people who want help to control common problems such as anxiety, depression, panic, poor sleep, burnout, loss of confidence or low self-esteem (in other words ‘Stress’).

The sessions will teach people to ‘become their own therapist’ and participants will be encouraged to work hard at practising skills they learn.

Each session builds together like a jigsaw to enable people to deal with their individual difficulties. Booklets and general information are provided weekly. Stress Control works as a class rather than as group therapy sessions, so participants will not be asked to discuss any personal problems in front of others.

The course organisers from within the Southern Trust said, “The pressures of modern life, juggling work, family and everyday challenges can take their toll on many people, with one in five people in the UK taking a day off work due to stress at some point.

“We hope that through these classes we can help to equip people with skills and techniques to manage their own stress or indeed help a relative or friend to prevent it escalating into a much more serious mental health problem.

“Everyone is welcome and we particularly encourage males who traditionally don’t feel comfortable talking about or seeking help for their problems.

“You may wish to bring a friend or family member with you. There is no referral system, you can simply turn up, take a seat and sit back and learn some great ways to control stress. It is a very relaxed informal setting and people can come and go as they need.

They added, “The course is designed to equip you with skills and techniques to manage stress or indeed help a relative or friend to prevent it escalating into a much more serious mental health problem.”
