The video style cookbook features a presenter who works with a sign language interpreter to translate the messages and text directions that accompany each step.

It includes eight easy to follow recipes and information on the Eat well Guide to explain how to achieve a healthy balanced diet.

Pat McAteer, Specialist Services Manager for the Southern Trust explained, “Communication is such a huge challenge for our Deaf community in terms of accessing information and resources that many of us take for granted.

“We have a very active Deaf Club who work to raise awareness of the needs of Deaf people and reduce isolation amongst the Deaf community.

“This unique cookbook has been created by and for our Deaf service users, promoting independence in the kitchen and giving them the confidence to create wholesome, healthy and cost effective meals,” he added.

Angela Mallon, Deaf participant in the programme commented, “I enjoyed Cook Well, Live Well very much and we made some lovely food that I would have never made before.

“My husband also enjoyed it.

“It was so interesting learning about nutrition and meals that are really easy to afford.

“I would love to do more. It is also so helpful to have the cookbook to remind me how we did it,” she added.

The book is available to view in video format on youtube here ‘Cook Well, Live Well’.
