Newry MLA welcomes support from US political figures for Good Friday Agreement
Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has welcomed the ongoing support of senior US political figures who have expressed concern over the impact of Brexit on the Good Friday Agreement.
Speaking to Newry Times, the Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator said, “An influential group of US members of Congress from the bipartisan Friends of Ireland Congress have written to the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressing their concern about the impact of Brexit on the Good Friday Agreement.
“The letter, signed by senior figures in Congress, opposes any attempt to unravel the Good Friday Agreement or any hardening of the border on the island of Ireland.

“This ongoing support from the United States is welcome and comes after a similar letter from US Senator Charles Schumer to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the reiteration of comments from Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, that the US will not agree a trade deal with Britain if the Good Friday Agreement is undermined.
“The US has long been supporters of the Good Friday Agreement and our peace process and this continued support is heartening.
“It is clear the EU and senior figures in the US are standing by the Good Friday Agreement.
He added, “The British government must now do the same.”
