Chaplaincy support in Newry’s Daisy Hill Hospital

The Southern Trust’s Chaplaincy Service provides 24 hour care for the pastoral and spiritual needs of patients, families and staff during the sometimes difficult experience of a hospital admission.

The chaplaincy team comprises the Church of Ireland, Catholic, Presbyterian and Methodist churches and they are supported by spiritual care volunteers and is available in Daisy Hill, Craigavon Area, South Tyrone and Lurgan Hospitals.

Patients are welcome to invite their own member of the clergy to visit them during their stay in hospital.

Chaplains visit wards regularly and have time to listen and reflect. They are interested in people’s journey and seek to support the hospital community by their presence and prayers.

They are available to meet with, listen to or to talk through issues with patients and their families. They also provide the opportunity for individual prayer and communion for patients on the ward.

Sometimes patients, family and staff may seek comfort from their own personal prayer and reflection and they may seek comfort by visiting the Quiet Room in Craigavon Area Hospital or the Church in Daisy Hill Hospital.

Everyone is welcome to use these facilities as a place to pray or to reflect.

The Quiet Room at Craigavon is located on the ground floor corridor just before you approach the lifts.  It is open 9.00am to 9.00pm.

The Church in Daisy Hill is located at the main foyer and is open 8.00am to 11.00pm. Both rooms can be used outside of these hours by contacting the Portering Service.

Mrs Melanie McClements, Interim Director of Acute Services for the Trust said, “Many of our patients take great comfort from their faith while they are ill, in hospital and we are proud to have such a dedicated Chaplaincy Service to support their spiritual needs.

“Our Chaplains are also a great support to staff who, due to the nature of our work are often faced with emotional and stressful situations.”
