Advice for consumers following Debenhams administration announcement

Debenhams announced on Tuesday 9 April that it has officially gone into administration, appointing FTI Consulting as the administrator.

If you have Debenhams gift cards or vouchers you may be wondering what to do now.

John French, Chief Executive of The Consumer Council said, “The Consumer Council encourages consumers to use their Debenhams gift cards or vouchers as soon as possible.

“If a new owner buys over the business, it will be up to them whether to honour gift cards or vouchers.

“If you have a Debenhams gift card/voucher, you could also check with the person who bought it whether it was purchased using a credit or Visa debit card. If so, they may be able to secure a full refund from the card issuer, if the store refuses to honour the gift card or voucher,” he continued.

John added, “If you plan to buy a single item in Debenhams costing £100 or more, use your credit card, even to pay a small amount of the sum as you have added protection under The Consumer Credit Act if things go wrong.

“Alternatively, payment by debit card can mean you can get your money back using the Chargeback process offered by your debit card provider. Check their terms and conditions to make sure you are protected.”
