A respected pensioner in her 80’s is the latest victim of an attempted break-in, just one of many to have occured in recent weeks.

“Such was their brazeness they moved a heavy coal bunker several feet in order to reach the living room window which was some height off the ground.

“The victim’s family immediately called to my home to report the details of this incident.

“The pensioner targeted has been a Derrybeg resident for over 50 years and comes from a well-respected family, it’s disgusting that they would be targeted in such fashion.

He continued, “In recent weeks we have been inundated with reports from local residents regarding attempted break-ins.

“We have distributed home safety advice to every home in the Derrybeg area and our activists have maintained a visible presence in the area during the dark nights.

“On a number of occasions would-be thieves have been disturbed and disrupted by local residents before making their escape empty-handed.

“Members of the local community have also volunteered to assist us with these initiatives as we continue to help deter those who seek to target our neighbours and community.

“As Christmas approaches we urge further vigilance and we pledge to step up our activism in the area in the coming weeks,” Stephen added.
