‘Commonwealth Youth Games have become collateral damage’ – McNulty

SDLP Sports and Communities Spokesperson Justin McNulty MLA has said that it is a sorry indictment of our stalled political process following the news that Northern Ireland will no longer be able to host the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2021.

McNulty stated that both the DUP and Sinn Féin must reflect on this decision and consider how different it could have been if we had had a functioning Assembly and Executive in place.

The MLA for Newry and Armagh commented, “I am extremely disappointed that the Commonwealth Games Council has decided that Belfast will no longer host the 2021 Commonwealth Youth Games.

“The Games, alongside the tourism opportunities that would have come with hosting, are now collateral damage of the DUP and Sinn Féin and their inability to put the interests of the people here above their infighting.

“What we are seeing now is the manifestation of our political impasse, and what’s worrying, is that this is only the beginning.

He added, “It is imperative that this news invokes a sense of urgency around the restoration of devolved government to ensure fantastic opportunities like this will never again be missed.”
