Fearon calls for a halt to cuts to Human Rights Commission
Sinn Fein’s equality spokesperson Megan Fearon has called for a halt to cuts on the Human Rights Commission budget.
Speaking to Newry Times, the Newry and Armagh MLA commented, “The Human Rights Commission was established as part of the Good Friday Agreement and it was expected to play a key role in protecting and promoting people’s rights.
“However the Commission’s budget is down 37% in real terms since 2011 after year-on cuts imposed by the British government.
“It is time for an end to the attempts by the British government and the DUP to block the rights-based society envisaged in the Good Friday Agreement.
She added, “This includes an end to cuts to the Human Rights Commission’s budget.”
