Spate of burglaries in Newry and Mourne ‘may be linked’ police say

Detectives are appealing for information following a number of burglaries that were reported in the Newry area on Wednesday 13th December.

Speaking to Newry Times, Detective Sergeant Mark Crothers said, “We believe that these incidents may be linked. Two properties in Bessbrook were targeted between 7pm – 10.30pm on Wednesday.

In the first incident, in Father Cullen Park, a number of males called at the front door of a house and when the resident did not answer, the group made off in a small dark-coloured vehicle.

A second property in the Cloughreagh Park area of the village was also entered and ransacked some time during the evening.

Between 6.45pm and 9.15pm, a window was smashed and a number of rooms ransacked in a property that had been entered in the John Martin Gardens area of Newry.

He continued, “A property in the Craignamona View area of Mayobridge was entered at around 8.30pm and an upstairs bedroom of the property ransacked. A number of males were seen leaving the area at speed in a dark-coloured Volkswagen Golf.

“Anyone who has any information or saw anything suspicious in these areas during Wednesday evening should contact detectives on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1286 of 13/12/17.

Detective Sergeant Crothers added, “Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
