Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has said a Fianna Fáil councillor’s call for a ‘hard border’ in Ireland is ‘disgraceful attack on border communities’.

He was speaking following what the local MP described as ‘a bizarre and xenophobic statement’ from Fianna Fáil Councillor Emma Coffey in which she called for a ‘hard border’ in Ireland to protect ‘national integrity’ and against European migrants.

The Newry Armagh MP said, “This call for the imposition of an EU frontier in Ireland is a disgrace.

“As a representative of communities living along the Irish border, I know the great fear and anxiety in the community about the impact Brexit will have on their lives.

“Moreover, the anti-immigrant and racist tone of this demand is entirely unacceptable.

“The people of Ireland are welcoming and tolerant of their neighbours, across Ireland and throughout the world.

Brady added, “Like the Tory party, Fianna Fáil have shamefully chosen to blame migrants for the actions of the British government.”
