McAteer welcomes baby heart screening at Daisy Hill
Independent Newry City Councillor Kevin McAteer has welcomed the news that baby heart screening will be available at Daisy Hill Hospital.
Speaking to Newry Times, the Independent Councillor stated, “It is always welcoming news when heart screenings are available in the area but I am delighted to hear that they are now available for babies.
“One of the most common heart defects in babies is CHD, congenital heart disease and although newborns seem fine at first, once they are discharged their health can deteriorate further a few months later.
“These screenings will now allow doctors to discover the defect at a much earlier stage, allowing them to monitor the defect and the baby’s health, which in turn allows for treatment.
McAteer added, “With around 1,850 births each year, this will allow doctors at Daisy Hill to detect about 1-2 cases of CHD yearly. The screening will be tested for a year before recommending whether to extend it further.”
