Sinn Fein MLA Conor Murphy has backed calls from the north’s Retail Consortium for a review and reform of the north’s Business Rates system. Conor Murphy“Sinn Féin have been calling for fundamental reform of the Business Rates system here since the latest evaluation saw local business facing enormous hikes in their rates bills,” he told Newry Times. “When the evaluation was carried out countless businesses from across the constituency came to us to tell us that these increases would mean job losses and business closures. “Since then we’ve kept the pressure on Land and Property Services and the Department of Finance to review this issue. I’ve requested a meeting with the Finance Minister to discuss the effects of the latest rates evaluation and the urgent need for reform,” Murphy added.
