Strategy to protect Irish bees welcomed
Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed an all Ireland strategy designed to tackle the decline in Irish bees.
Ruane said, “In June I hosted a delegation from the County Down beekeepers and the Minister of Agriculture who outlined to her the problems facing beekeepers and the threat to indigenous Irish bees.
“I am delighted that we have now developed a strategy to protect bees and that 68 organisations right across the island of Ireland have signed up to it.
“The strategy includes encouraging farmers to allow wild flowers and plants to grow on verges and boundaries as well as developing wild areas in public parks and gardens.
“Bees play an important role in the natural pollination of plants and flowers and maintaining a healthy bee population is crucial. There is also a threat of extinction to three indigenous species of bees so protecting their future must also be a priority,” Ruane added.
