‘Chancellor has abandoned renewables for nuclear folly’ – Ritchie
SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has criticised a decision by Chancellor George Osborne to press ahead with funding for the proposed Nuclear plant at Hinkley Point while funding for renewable technologies continues to be strangled.
Speaking to Newry Times, she said, “People may be easily misled by the tree that forms the basis of the Conservative Party logo.
“For many, that would seem to represent a commitment to protecting the environment and promoting new green technologies. But the only green in the Tory energy plan is the fuel at the heart of its misguided nuclear juggernaut.
“The planned nuclear plant at Hinkley point has been a disaster. The timeframe has been derailed, the investment has not been confirmed and the situation at Sellafield proves that nuclear energy continues to pose a significant public safety risk,” she insisted.
“The Chancellor should not be seeking to guarantee significant government resources for this project while placing a stranglehold on funding for renewable technologies.
Ritchie added, “I will continue to pursue this matter on behalf of coastal communities in Ireland who have suffered as a result of these misguided policies.”
