The Ring of Gullion – The place to be this August: Launch of Lúnasa Festival

Excitement is building for the first ever Lúnasa Festival in the Ring of Gullion.

Lunasa1The Lúnasa Festival is a month long community festival, showcasing the rich landscape, heritage and culture of the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

During the Lúnasa Festival there is at least one event every day in August. The Lúnasa Festival is being co-ordinated by the Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership and a committee of volunteers; part financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Lúnasa Festival is kicking off with the Forkhill Fleadh Rua, the only redhead festival in Ulster. It is a great opportunity to get together and celebrate all things red, especially the redhead gene and our native red squirrels. A warm welcome is guaranteed, even if you don’t have red hair.

There will be a family fun day with red themed games and competitions, craft stalls, a cafe (with proceeds going to PIPS) and traditional music sessions. The Fleadh Rua will round off with a céilí in the evening, with music from Bothán.

With an event every day there is something for everyone in the Lúnasa Festival. If you like handicrafts there will be range of craft orientated activities, organised by ROGHA for their Festival of Craft, including a bus tour of their local craft studios.

gullion5For walkers there will be guided walks with the Ring of Gullion Ambassadors and the Gap o’ the North Walking club. Budding citizen scientists are welcome to join in at a range of fun science days including mini-beast hunting and pond dipping.

For those looking for a more relaxed experience, the knowledgeable local guide, Una Walsh, will be leading bus tours, taking in the highlights of the Ring of Gullion, every Saturday.

There will also be a series of talks and story evenings with renowned speakers such as Dermot Somers and Francis Quinn. Alternatively you could try a Meditation Day Retreat with Xhale, (for more information click HERE.)

For full details of all the Lúnasa Festival events visit the Ring of Gullion website or collect an events guide from tourism outlets around Newry and the Ring of Gullion.
