Appeal for witnesses after attempted hijacking

Police are investigating the report of an attempted hijacking of a car in the Rathfriland Road area of Hilltown in the early hours of Saturday 25th July.

psniAt around midnight a male motorist was flagged down by two male pedestrians in the Peggys Loaning area of Banbridge.

They asked the driver to take them into Banbridge town centre which the driver agreed to do. Once inside the car, however, the two males became threatening and aggressive and demanded that the driver take them to Hilltown.

The driver took them to Hilltown where an attempt was then made to take car from him at Rathfriland Road. Passers-by came to the driver’s assistance and the two men made off across nearby fields.

The driver was not physically injured as a result of this incident but was left badly shaken.

Detective Inspector David Henderson has appealed to anyone with any information about this incident to contact detectives at Newry on 101 quoting reference 31250715 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
