Cult classic ‘Blade Runner’ and thriller ‘Rosewater’ screening at Newry Omniplex
Spectacular sci-fi thriller, Blade Runner, and powerful new docudrama, Rosewater, are showing exclusively in Newry Omniplex in June as part of Project Monday.
Make a Monday movie date and see something world-class at your local Omniplex.
Project Monday handpicks the best new independent and world cinema, classic reissues and documentaries and screens them on a Monday, at Omniplex Cinemas across Northern Ireland, as well as Queen’s Film Theatre, Belfast.
Blade Runner: The Final Cut (8th June):
In Ridley Scott’s brooding, doom-laden thriller set in a spectacularly imagined future Los Angeles, a hired killer named Deckard (Harrison Ford) tracks down a group of renegade androids who have escaped from slavery on a colonised planet. Loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s paranoid masterpiece Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and undoubtedly one of the most influential sci-fi movies of all time, Blade Runner is an unforgettable big-screen experience.
Rosewater: (29th June):
Director Jon Stewart’s (The Daily Show) striking debut is a powerfully affecting docudrama based on the real-life ordeal of London-based journalist MaziarBahari (Gael Garcia Bernal) who, after appearing on Stewart’s show, was accused of being a spy, imprisoned and brutally interrogated by the Iranian government for 118 days. Rosewater is a vivid recreation of the events leading up to Bahari’s arrest, and a powerful evocation of his emotional and intellectual struggle to survive.
Speaking to Newry Times, Susan Picken, Head of QFT, said, “Project Monday is about bringing new and classic films from across the globe right to your doorstep, via your local Omniplex cinema. You don’t have to be in the centre of Belfast to see the best that cinema has to offer.
“June is a great month to get involved with two fantastically different films showing as part of Project Monday. Blade Runner is a cult classic that deserves to be seen on the big screen, while Rosewater is a serious, yet thrilling, new drama, based on true events. This is cinema you can really get your teeth into.”
Paul John Anderson, Operations Director of Omniplex Cinemas, also commented on the new venture, “Omniplex is looking forward to offering our audiences something different with Project Monday.
“The monthly screenings at six of our cinemas, showing simultaneously with QFT, will give filmgoers around Northern Ireland the opportunity to see the best new independent and world cinema in their local multiplex.”
The participating Omniplex Cinemas are Antrim, Armagh, Derry, Kennedy Centre, Larne and Newry. Tickets for Omniplex screenings can be booked at omniplex.ie. Tickets for QFT screenings can be booked at queensfilmtheatre.com.
